Workers Credit Union, through CFS*, offers a wide variety of investment options from hundreds of different investments and insurance companies. The investments options range from conservative fixed interest to moderate risk options and more aggressive options with stock market exposure.

Here are some of the investments products to consider for your portfolio:

A basket of investments that are professionally managed and follow specific investment rules set out by the fund’s prospectus.  It can be conservatively invested in money markets and bonds or more aggressively invested in stocks of US and foreign companies.

Individual securities issued by corporations and governments.  Stocks are an ownership in the corporation. When you invest in stocks, you may benefit from the success of a company if the company does well. While stocks are higher-risk assets, they can also potentially offer greater returns.

Bonds are loans made to corporations and governments and typically pay interest to the investor until a defined maturity date.

Market-Linked CDs (MLCDs) are certificates of deposit that are linked to the performance of a specific market index. They typically have guarantees not to lose money if held to maturity and can have FDIC insurance up to applicable limits. MLCDs are not appropriate for all depositors including clients needing a guaranteed interest payment or seeking full participation in the stock market and they may incur penalties for early withdrawals.

Annuities are typically long-term investment contracts issued by insurance companies that are designed to provide retirement income. The term annuity refers to a stream of payments guaranteed for some period of time, either for a specific number of years, until a certain age, or for one’s lifetime. These guarantees are based upon the full faith, credit and claims paying ability of the issuing insurance company.

An annuity can be either an immediate annuity, where payments begin immediately upon investing or a deferred annuity, where your deposited investment can grow tax-deferred until a future date you choose for your payments to begin.

There are basically three types of annuity investment options – fixed, variable, and indexed.

  • Fixed annuities offer a competitive, guaranteed stated interest rate for a specific period of time, typically 3-10 years, without exposure to market fluctuations. Interest gains and payment amounts are guaranteed by the insurance company.
  • Variable annuities offer a wide array of investment options to choose from. However, unlike fixed annuities, the value of your account is not guaranteed and payouts will depend on the performance of the underlying securities in which you are invested.
  • Indexed annuities participate in equity market performance up to a limit and can earn interest based on an underlying index, like the S&P 500, but still offers principal downside protection for those who are sensitive to stock market volatility.

Managed Accounts offer a comprehensive disciplined approach to investing. Using institutional managers to handle the day-to-day investment decisions, they deliver a customized investment portfolio based on your risk tolerance and objectives.
